In 1992 Annie and Greg decide to visit India, stopping first in Delhi to meet old friends, Sardar Pritam Singh Sandhu and his wife Cuckoo and then travel south to Ooty (now Udhagamandalam), the turnaround point of six Comexes including the Queen's Silver Jubilee Comex 8. A warm welcome awaits at the Ooty Club (established in 1830). Krishna Moorthy (otherwise just Moorthy) owns a taxi; his wife, Mary, works in the club's office.
He is hired to drive Greg and Annie to visit Sister Agnes Laudu at Nirmala (Immaculate) the Convent of St Francis de Sales: a school and kindergarten for the children of women labourers and tea-pickers. There are 600 children at the time. (Mary herself was a child of Nirmala.) Moorthy had been driver and batman to a Colonel Willis who, on leaving Ooty, presented Moorthy with an old Ambassador car, and a cottage (now Flora Cottage). The Colonel also instructed Moorthy to consider marrying Mary, which he dutifully did.. Moorthy is a Hindu and Mary a Roman Catholic. Moorthy claims that they approach God from two sides!
